Yes, AI (and also cryptocurrency) uses quite a bit of energy. I doubt people in tech really care about the environment. They just like to virtue signal. There have been some stories about using nuclear power and uranium for energy:
Minerals have become the new oil. Cobalt is also used in our rechargeable batteries. There's a book by Siddharth Kara entitled “Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives” that talks about the child slave labor that goes on in the Congo to mine cobalt. I haven't gotten around to reading the book yet, but I've heard him discuss what he saw on a bunch of podcasts. There's this JRE clip of him talking about it if you're curious:
Lithium was the mineral thought to be more important than magnesium on the periodic table.. here’s an interesting fact, every American state in America with the highest suicide rates and violent crime towards others has the lowest levels of lithium.. and why is it used to correct bipolar disorder and depression?
In correct quantities like so many other minerals it is a friend to health and lifespan… pollution is the consequence of dirty mining… when it is allowed to leech into waterways and agricultural land… there is a lot more to the story of lithium that we realise.
Yes! I wrote a post on lithium orotate which is useful at low doses for mental health. 7-up used to contain lithium, hence it's name since it improved mood. 7 was used bc closest to lithium’s atomic weight number on the periodic table (6.9).
Thanks for doing this research - very timely.
