Pumpkin Seed Oil for Prostate Inflammation
PSO may be promoted as beneficial for the prostate because pumpkin seeds are a good source of zinc and prostate inflammation is associated with zinc deficiency.
The study by Zerafatjiou et al. (2021) compared 720 mg of PSO taken twice daily to a group of men taking Tamsulosin once at bedtime (0.4 mg) for three months. Both groups saw significant improvements, and a higher dose of PSO at 1080 may be more effective since the Tamsulosin group did see slightly greater improvements. The researchers used a lower PSO dose because participants would have taken 3 capsules otherwise, which may have reduced compliance.
Check your prostate supplement. Many will contain PSO, but the dose may be too low to see significant results because it is a blend of other ingredients. For instance, the Life Extension Ultra Prostate formula supplement contains 200 mg of PSO in a two-capsule serving. This dose may be enough for someone taking it for prostate health with no to minimal issues. Still, someone else with greater prostate issues may benefit from adding in more PSO, zinc-rich foods, and taking a multivitamin that contains zinc.
