Is Your Parmesan Cheese a Fake? How to Tell.
Know what to look for to avoid fake products when you grocery shop
Finding Real Parmesan Cheese
This article by Experience Life discusses fake products that I was aware of, such as honey, maple syrup, and olive oil. Read the article if you are unfamiliar with counterfeit products in the market.
The one food I was not aware of that fake products existed was parmesan cheese. The author states that:
Authentic Parmigiano-Reggiano is a strictly regulated product made of milk from dairy cows that graze pastures in specific provinces of Italy.
It is long-aged and inspected before making it to the market.
U.S. parmesan cheese products do not adhere to these standards, especially grated parmesan, which may have added cellulose, a food additive that keeps the cheese from lumping in the container.
To identify real parmesan cheese
Parmigiano-Reggiano, which meets Italian standards, will have the name stamped in pin dots on the rind. Even if you buy a wedge, you should be able to see these pin dots.
To avoid fake grated parmesan, look for Parmigiano-Reggiano on the label.

That is more of a brand distinction. There are still parmesans (as we refer to them generally) that are of good quality but follow different protocols... it's just that that specific protocol yields that specific taste and gets to have that specific label. It's not fake food if it doesn't bear their name... it's just got different processing. Read the label and research the brand. As long as you know they are using good quality milk to start with and there aren't any weird additives it comes down to more a question of taste as they will taste different.
At the moment I still can't taste or smell so I could eat Limburger and lots of other nasty tasting but good for me items.. lol
Thanks for the great articles! Here are 2 eye-opening books related to this topic... it's really unbelievable! "Real Food/Fake Food: Why You Don't Know What You're Eating and What You Can Do About It" by Larry Olmstead and "Pandora's Lunchbox" by Melanie Warner.
